How often should I add salt to a water softener?
Most households add a bag every 4–8 weeks and keep the brine tank at least a quarter to half full. Don’t let it run empty — once the salt is gone, the softener stops regenerating and hard water gets through.
How many bags of salt per year for a family of 4?
Around 10–14 forty-pound bags a year is typical for moderately hard water, more in hard-water regions. Larger households and higher hardness can push it past 20 bags.
Why is my water softener using so much salt?
Common causes are very hard water, a high salt-dose setting, a unit regenerating too often, or a problem like a stuck valve or salt bridge. If usage suddenly jumps, check the settings and look for a hardened crust of salt that’s keeping the tank from drawing brine.
What kind of salt should I use?
Most softeners run well on solar crystals or evaporated pellets; pellets resist bridging and mushing. Use the type your manufacturer recommends, and avoid mixing types in a way that forms a hard crust in the tank.
