It comes down to one thing: whether propane heats the house. If it does, you're looking at roughly 800 to 1,500 gallons over a winter. If it's just your stove and water heater, you might take five years to burn that much.
So the useful question isn't "how much does a house use" — it's "what runs on propane, and how cold does it get." Here's the breakdown.

Per day, month, and winter — if you heat with propane
- Per day: ~2–3 gallons on an average winter day; 5–6 in a deep freeze.
- Per month: roughly 150–250 gallons through the cold stretch. October and March, a fraction of that.
- Per winter: commonly 800–1,200 gallons for a typical heated home, more if it's big or drafty.

Stove-only homes are a different scale entirely
If propane is just your range — or your range plus the water heater — you're measuring in months and years, not days. A 500-gallon tank can run a cooktop for the better part of a decade. People with this setup sometimes forget they even have a tank, right up until the hot water goes cold.
Why your number won't sit still all winter
Here's what the averages hide: propane heat doesn't burn at a steady rate. It tracks the temperature. A normal week and a brutal one can differ by double, and the brutal weeks are exactly when a tank you thought was fine becomes a problem. Treat the monthly average as a planning number, not a promise — which is the whole reason we watch the weather for you.
